The British Consulate-General in Düsseldorf is looking for an independent, dynamic, and detail-oriented part time Pro-Consul to join our dedicated team.

Main purpose of job:

In this role, you’ll provide professional and empathetic consular assistance to British nationals living in or visiting Germany—supporting them through life’s most challenging moments. From assisting vulnerable individuals to delivering modern, efficient services, your work will have a direct impact on people’s lives.

You’ll collaborate with colleagues across Germany and the wider EuroAsia region, which spans 29 countries, and contribute to prevention campaigns, crisis management, and outreach initiatives. This is a chance to build strong networks with local authorities, NGOs, and UK partners while representing British interests abroad.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Consular Services: Issue Emergency Travel Documents, provide notarial services, and manage appointments.
  • Assistance: Deliver empathetic support to British nationals in distress, liaising with UK and local authorities.
  • Prevention & Outreach: Develop campaigns, organise events, and build networks to keep the British public informed.
  • Crisis Management: Play a vital role in preparedness and response during emergencies.
  • Corporate Contribution: Engage in Embassy life, promote wellbeing, and support a positive working environment.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:

  • Full professional proficiency in German and English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Customer service: previous experience in a customer facing role and ability to response to a wide range of customer needs;
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Computer literacy in all Microsoft Office packages (including Copilot AI) and accurate typing skills;
  • Flexibility, resilience, patience, and the ability to deal with difficult situations, including the ability to work unsocial hours in an emergency or crisis;
  • Ability to display a high level of discretion and responsibility.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in a similar role, for example social work;
  • Knowledge of the German administrative, justice and legal systems and social services.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a part time (18.75 hours a week), fixed-term 12 months contract. € 26,352.- rising to a maximum of approx. € 29,601.- gross per annum after a qualifying period in addition to performance related pay (salary is not negotiable). Candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation in Germany in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.

Please be advised that Consular positions at the FCDO entail dealing with crisis and casework in situations that may involve death, detention, rape, assault, post-mortems, prison visits and highly distressed customers. Candidates should therefore have a high level of resilience to trauma.
