Role:

The Preconstruction Sustainability Lead will manage sustainability input into bids and tenders and support projects during preconstruction services agreements (PCSA’s). They will be a technical expert in their field, assisting project teams to navigate requirements such as BREEAM, LEED and Whole Life Carbon targets.

They will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to direct decisions and activities towards sustainable and compliant outcomes that align with project objectives. They will interact and work with the wider sustainability function to align business activities with the sustainability strategy “Build Beyond”

Tender & Bid Support

  • Champion sustainability excellence in competitive bids, ensuring tender responses articulate clear, compliant, and innovative environmental, social value and governance propositions
  • Collaborate with estimators, planners, and bid managers to develop costed sustainability solutions, such as low-carbon materials, building certifications, environmental mitigation, regional permits
  • Analysing information during preconstruction and advising on environmental risks and opportunities

Preconstruction Services Agreements

  • Managing sustainability deliverables during PCSA’s, building on the work done during the tender period to deliver on client priorities and set projects up for success on sustainability
  • Manage the impact of design iterations during PCSA’s to ensure that client carbon targets and green building certifications remain on track
  • Manage environmental permit applications and environmental site surveys during PCSA’s so that permits are approved in time

Carbon and Lifecycle Analysis

  • Oversee early-stage embodied and operational carbon assessments using whole life carbon and lifecycle tools to inform value engineering, material choices, and procurement routes
  • Review and challenge carbon narratives and assumptions to improve credibility and competitiveness in bids

Design & Technical Advisory

  • Work with design teams and consultants to ensure sustainability is embedded into early-stage design briefs and option appraisals
  • Influence decisions around themes such as energy strategy, biodiversity, water efficiency, and indoor environmental quality prior to design freeze

Client and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Prepare engaging sustainability content for client interviews and workshops, positioning the business as a thought leader in responsible construction
  • Translate complex sustainability topics into clear, actionable strategies for internal and external stakeholders

Innovation and Best Practice

  • Identify emerging trends, standards, and technologies and incorporate into bid approaches and preconstruction methodologies
  • Drive innovation in how sustainability is evidenced and quantified in bids (e.g. digital tools, dashboards, scenario analysis)

Risk and Compliance Management

  • Ensure bids comply with relevant sustainability regulations, planning conditions, and third-party certification schemes (e.g. LEED, BREEAM, WELL, DGNB)
  • Assess and manage ESG risks in preconstruction, including reputational, regulatory, and delivery-related risks

Capacity Building

  • Mentor and upskill bid teams, estimators, planners, and designers on sustainability opportunities and expectations within preconstruction
  • Develop tools, templates, and guidance notes to ensure consistent and high-quality sustainability inputs across regions

Performance Tracking and Handover

  • Define sustainability KPIs for preconstruction and ensure a smooth handover to project delivery teams, with clear expectations, baselines, and commitments
  • Support lessons learned and feedback loops to refine future preconstruction approaches

Requirements:

Qualifications

Essential
A qualification in an environment / sustainability / engineering / architectural discipline
Desirable
LEED / BREEAM / WELL / DGNB / GREENSTAR (or other) qualification as a practitioner or assessor

Experience

Essential
3+ years’ experience in construction sustainability

Experience with WLC assessments / LCA assessments and costing low carbon solutions

Desirable
Exposure to preconstruction and bidding and tendering

Experience working in a professional environment for a tier 1 contractor

Strong commercial awareness and has demonstratable experience with “costing sustainability”

Experience conducting building emission LCAs with software such as OneClick

Core Skills

Essential
Competent with Microsoft Office packages; Word, Excel PowerPoint

Clear, effective verbal communicator with strong interpersonal skills

Accustomed to report writing and when required presenting to varied audiences

Desirable

Familiarity with tools such as IES VE, OneClick LCA, Energy Plus, Revit, and other modelling/assessment platforms.

Other Requirements

Essential
Must hold a driving licence applicable for region / country of the role origin

Knowledge of environmental and social global megatrends

Desirable

Confident speaker and able to talk / present to internal and external senior construction industry peers

A member (any status) of a professional body linked to ESG or environment such as IEMA or IES

Other Requirements:
To facilitate the responsibilities of the role the post-holder may need to travel nationally on occasions
The role will directly report into the Principal Sustainability Lead for preconstruction and indirectly to Project Directors
Benefits are linked to the role grade and current business offering
The role will be based out of the TSL Frankfurt Office, with attendance to TSL Sites when required

Other Requirements:

To facilitate the responsibilities of the role the post-holder may need to travel nationally on occasions
